Outlook 2007 & Instant Search
My keenly awaited package from MSDN landed on Thursday and naturally I wasted no time in checking what was in it. Of keen interest were Windows Vista and Office 2007 Ultimate. Vista I don’t think I will let anywhere near my Toshiba notebook for a couple of reasons:
- Some of the essential things I use may not be fully supported on Vista. Visual Studio 2005 for instance!
- It took me MONTHS to install all the software and utilities I use. I am not willing to undergo it again!
- Specifications of said notebook are not encouraging
However I have a 3 Ghz Desktop with 1 GB of RAM and that I will be throwing Vista at, probably this weekend.
The Office 2007 however I am definitely interested in (and need working reliably as the beta will time out in February) and so after chugging through the install and consuming most of my remaining hard disk space, my office menu looks like this:
Groove will likely have ZERO use but who knows? All the rest I definitely use, and use regularly.
The first thing to test drive is Outlook. It’s not as snappy as 2003 to startup and already it has a few minor irritations. For starters the first time it ran it popped up this:
There is one thing very wrong with this dialog … what exactly is “a component for windows” that is missing? Come on guys!
Turns out that this component is Windows Desktop search. You’ll only know this if you click yes and it opens the site for you. I am perfectly happy with Google Desktop search so nothing got installed.
Thinking I was done I proceeded to proceed to import an old PST just to get a feel of the thing. Irritatingly, it looks like Outlook will nag me until the end of time until I install WDS. There is no way I can find to get rid of that obnoxious invitation to “click here to enable Instant Search“.
If you know how I can reclaim those few pixels, let me know!
One thing I’ll give full marks for — it looks gorgeous. But that instant search thing will not go away. It merrily simpers at you from the calendar
It merrily winks at you from the contacts
And it wags its fanny at you also from the task list
The RSS functionality is a good idea but for anyone with dozens of subscriptions it is absolutely and utterly useless because it does not allow you to read several items at once, the invaluable “newspaper view”. This alone makes it a non-starter for me.
A nice touch would be for the RSS feeds to use favicons instead of that generic folder. After 10 subscriptions it looks positively ugly. But that is a discussion for another day.
Anyway, this is just a first impression and not a review. But seriously — if you know how I can remove that annoying “Instant Search” business be a sport and let me know!
Another thing I’ve noticed — older plugins seem to work seamlessly. My NOD32 works like poetry, as does my GPG and my Google Desktop Search.

In Outlook to to Tools:Options:Other:Advanced
Once there remove the check next to the option: Show prompts to install WDS

Just found this blog that you have somehow managed to keep hidden from me. You need a link to this from your other blog.
Like it already (maybe as much as the other one). As an Oracle/UNIX-head who was recently forced to start using SQLServer/SSAS/Visual Studio, I am beginning to have a better appreciation of MS products.
More posts please!

Little nice blog you got going here… quiet though!
Groove: We use it at work to synchronise (as workspaces) our working papers which are done, encrypted and stored in a different application. The two apps work seamlessly.
Its a really nice app and I can see where Ms is going with this…sharing docs, version control and workspaces within Co. intranets will be so much easier.
I once read (on google tech news) that Ms bought the Co that made groove and was equally amazed to see it on Office 2007. However, am yet to play around with it (on the Ms. Office suite)

Added on March 20th, 2007 at 8:39 amTry the instant search - it is one of the better things about Outlook 2007. It’s better integrated than GDS can be.
Outside of Outlook, WDS is a pain though. But then I don’t fancy GDS either.

Added on March 21st, 2007 at 3:38 pmI can’t find that option to turn off Windows Live Search. I much prefer Google Desktop Search. WLS is slower and doesn’t index nearly as much. Worse, it’s search results are not nearly as accurate.
In all honesty, it is this reason (and others) that I decided to revert to Outlook 2003. (At least for now.)

Added on April 10th, 2007 at 3:19 pmHi:
Saw your comment about Outlook 2007 working perfectly with GPG. I just can’t figure out how to get this happening. Would you care to post some pointers?
regards,
Ram

Added on September 4th, 2007 at 4:17 pmGPG in outlook 2007. When installiong gpg4win do not install the gpgol plugin. Instead of that install the gdata plugin (http://www3.gdata.de/gpg/download.html). For me it worked like a charm….

Added on September 17th, 2007 at 6:08 pmHumberto,
I’ve installed gpg4win skipping the gpol plugin as you suggested, and installed the GDATA plugin version 091. I see the keyring in the toolbar, yet when I send a message I get a dialog box titled “invalid certificate” which says “outlook was unable to sign or encrypt this message because you have no certificates…….”. Am I missing another step in the process?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Added on May 14th, 2008 at 9:08 amFound this page when i was looking at how to remove that nag. One of the biggest irritants after installing Office 2007, as i am emotionally attached to my Copernic (how many times has it found me the info i need on my irreparably cluttered 100 Gig drive) .. Thanks!

Added on July 17th, 2008 at 12:51 amGreat info, and Thanks Roger for how to remove it. I think there has been an update to GPG4win and winpt as my gpgol plugin worked perfectly.
